Much of your time involves providing detailed feedback on student essays and research, meeting one-on-one during office hours to mentor students through challenging concepts.

Early career roles are often as an adjunct or lecturer, where you’ll focus on teaching introductory courses. With experience and published research, you can progress to a tenure-track professorship, gaining more autonomy and eventually becoming a senior professor—a recognized expert who mentors new academics and leads a department. Earnings grow substantially with this progression from contract work to a tenured position.

Software and AI are changing the research and administrative sides of this work, assisting with data analysis and finding sources. However, the core of your job remains deeply human and irreplaceable. AI cannot mentor a student through a personal intellectual crisis, facilitate a sensitive classroom discussion about cultural identity, or generate the novel, critical insights that define academic excellence. You’ll use technology as a tool, freeing you up to focus on the person-to-person guidance and inspiration that truly matter.
